Trio launch workshop to improve presentation skills

A new workshop for those wanting to improve their public speaking and presentation skills has been launched by a trio of Cumbria-based communicators.

BBC trainer and journalist Tom Speight, Give A Day to the City founder Andy Fearon and media consultant and former newspaper editor David Helliwell are putting on the training day.

Andy, who is also leader at Carlisle Vineyard Church, said: “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. So many people have a fear of public speaking or presenting in their jobs and really there’s no need.

“It’s like any other skill. With a little bit of help and practice it’s something anyone can do. That’s what this day is all about; enabling people to gain or improve a skill. And we’re going to have fun while we’re doing it.”

The full-day course is targeted at businesses but is suitable for anyone who wants to communicate effectively with a group.

Tom, who is also a regular live show host and chair of the National Rural Touring Forum, said: “We have come to presenting by different routes. Andy inspires with his passion and pride for what he does. Dave and I will be using our experience as journalists and trainers to tease out skills that people may have underused until this point.”

Pitching, Presenting and Public Speaking with Passion and Purpose will be held at Carlisle Vineyard Hub, (former Mitchell Dryer’s building), Lorne Street, from 10am to 4pm and includes lunch.

UPDATE: Given the most recent Coronavirus advice we’ve had to put the day on hold. We’ll re-arrange just as soon as it’s safe to do so. If you’re interested, drop an email to david@helliwellmedia.com and we’ll let you know when we’ve got a new date. In the meantime, stay safe and healthy.
